Defense against viruses or autoimmune disorder? When the phosphate decides …
The first defense line of the body against virus infections is composed of so-called restriction factors. SAMHD1, one of such restriction factors, does not only play a role in the defense against viruses but also in the development of autoimmune disorders and cancer. The question of which effect SAMHD1 exerts in the cell is decided by addition or removal of phosphate groups.
Modular virus-like particles as vaccine platform?
Virus-like particles (VLP) have been used as effective vaccines for quite a while. The modular combination of antigen and adjuvant in VLPs can further enhance the effect of the vaccine, thus conveying better protection. This was shown based on results obtained by a research group at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut.
