Environmental Management at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut
The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI) is actively committed to protecting the environment. In its role as the Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines, the Institute takes on responsibility for achieving climate neutrality of the federal administration by 2030 in accordance with section 15 of the Federal Climate Action Act. The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut has taken steps to achieve this goal by introducing an environmental management system (EMS) and has been certified under the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) since 2025. The legal basis for EMAS is Regulation (EC) No. 1221/2009 of the European Union.
With the EMAS certification, the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut undertakes to comply with all applicable environmental legislation and to organise a process to continuously improve internal environmental performance.
Our Environmental Guidelines
The core task of our environmental management system is to align the operations of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut with the guiding principle of sustainability and to avoid, or reduce as far as possible, negative effects on climate and the environment.
The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut has set itself the following environmental guidelines:
- We comply with environmental regulations and binding obligations and also aim to continuously improve our environmental performance to the extent possible.
- We include all employees. We encourage and expect environmentally friendly behaviour in the workplace.
- We keep sustainability in mind when selecting products and services for all types of procurement.
- We reduce our environmental impact by conserving resources.
- We communicate openly about our environmental performance and make the information accessible to everyone.
- We adjust our business travel processes and communication channels to be more sustainable.
- Along with environmental sustainability, we also take economic and social sustainability into account as part of the sustainability programme of measures.
- We do not accept partial successes but instead seek to continuously improve and develop our environmental management system.
