Antibodies
Antibodies (also called immunoglobulins) are proteins which form specific cells of the immune system against recognised substances foreign to the body. They serve as defences against pathogens. If the antibodies attack the body’s own proteins, this will lead to autoimmune diseases. If they are directed against innocuous allergens, such as grass pollen, this will cause allergens.
Immunoglobulins can be produced from human blood (immunoglobulin products), animal blood or a particular immune cell line (monoclonal antibodies).
Immunoglobulins, monoclonal antibodies and sera from donor animals are medicinal products for which the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI) is the competent authority in Germany.
