Erythrocytes (red blood cells) are highly specialised cells without nuclei and with limited metabolism; they contain haemoglobin, which is responsible for the exchange and transportation of the respiratory gases in the lungs, blood and tissue.
Erythrocyte concentrates (ECs) can be obtained either from whole blood donations or using a mechanical procedure. An anticoagulant solution is always added during the collection of ECs, as well as a special storage solution for preservation purposes. ECs are stored at temperatures between +2°C and +6°C.
