Strong in the Pandemic – that is the overarching theme of the Paul-Ehrlich- Institut's 2019/2020 Biennial Report, which is now available digitally for the first time in the form of a microsite. In the new and readily comprehensible online format, the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut provides an overview of its regulatory and research activities over the past two years. The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines, discharged important duties during the pandemic: The staff contributed to the development of safe and effective vaccines against COVID-19 both nationally and internationally. They provided scientific and regulatory advice to drug developers, granted approval for clinical trials, evaluated medicines in the European marketing authorisation procedures, monitored drug safety after marketing authorisation as well as through official batch testing and its own research.

Even though the COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics were the focus of attention, the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut continued to ensure the availability of all other biomedicines during the pandemic. Access to effective and safe vaccines and biomedicines is a basic human requirement that also needs to be guaranteed during a pandemic.

In the report, exciting interviews and articles provide information on strategies and research, the diversity of regulatory work, and on organisational developments at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut. A facts-&-figures section gives readers an overview of research projects, regulatory achievements, finances, and publications. In a short introductory video, President Professor Klaus Cichutek and Vice-President Professor Stefan Vieths explain the challenges the Corona pandemic posed for the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut and how they were successfully met.
