"Medicines Are Not Sweets" – European Campaign Encourages Consumers to Use Over-the-Counter Medicines Wisely and to Always Read the Package Leaflet

The Heads of Medicines Agencies (HMA) network is launching a joint awareness campaign to inform the public across Europe about the safe use of over-the-counter medicines. As part of the campaign, all participating European medicines authorities are sharing the central message on their social media channels: "Medicines are not sweets. Even when taking over-the-counter medicines make sure to read the package leaflet, follow the instructions, and use them wisely." The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (Bundesinstitut für Arzneimittel und Medizinprodukte, BfArM) and the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI), the Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines, are participating as HMA members in the Europe-wide campaign. The authorities are using their social media presence to draw attention within Germany to this important topic. Campaign contributions from the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (Bundesamt für Verbraucherschutz und Lebensmittelsicherheit, BVL) emphasise the importance of responsible use of over-the-counter veterinary medicines.

Over-the-counter medicines make it possible to relieve symptoms and treat mild illnesses yourself without going to a doctor's office. However, like all other medicines, over-the-counter medicines can carry risks and side effects and should therefore be used wisely. Many contributing factors, such as using other medicinal products simultaneously, can impair safe use.

The package leaflet provides guidance. It contains all the important information, including who the medicine is suitable for, how to use it correctly, the intended duration of use, and known side effects and interactions with other medicines. Even if you have used a medicine before, it is important to read the package leaflet before each new use. Not only may there be personal changes such as a newly-diagnosed disease or allergy – the information in the package leaflet is also updated in the light of new scientific findings. Always consult your doctor if over-the-counter medicines do not relieve symptoms or serious side effects occur.

Working Together to Ensure the Safe Use of Over-the-Counter Medicines

Share the campaign contributions from BfArM, Paul-Ehrlich-Institut and BVL on your personal or professional social media channels to help spread the message. Broad visibility contributes to increased awareness of the responsible use of medicines.
