"Stefan Vieths always used his scientific commitment and regulatory expertise for the quality, safety, and efficacy of test and therapy allergens. With his involvement in the therapy allergen regulation, he significantly advanced the development of evidence-based allergen products. The Viktor Rupert Medal confirms this successful commitment. We are very happy for him," said Professor Klaus Cichutek, president of the PEI, Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines.

At the PEI, Professor Vieths established the section "Development and Standardisation of Allergen Extracts". From 2002 to 2017, he was head of Division "Allergology" – the only division for allergology medicines and research at a medicines authority in Europe.

Professor Vieths is a state-certified food chemist and acquired his professorship with research on vegetable food allergens at the TU (University of Acquired Science) of Berlin. He is extracurricular professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in the fields of biochemistry, chemistry, and pharmacy.

As expert at the European Medicines agency (EMA) and the European Pharmacopoeia Commission, he made important contributions to the current international medicines regulations for allergen products. Since 2005, he has been the chairman of the sub-committee "Allergen Standardisation" of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) and has committed himself to important functions at the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) for several years.

In addition, he has been chairman of the professional conference "International Paul-Ehrlich-Seminar – Allergen Products for Diagnosis and Therapy: Regulation and Science", which the PEI holds jointly with the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) every three years.

Professor Vieths works as assessor for various international journals and prepares assessment reports for research applications for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, German Research Foundation) and a number of international organisations. He is co-editor of various scientific journals and (co-)author of more than 230 original publications and more than 70 review articles and position papers.
