Through his scientific commitments and his regulatory expertise, Stefan Vieths has for more than three decades been making key contributions to the further development and cultivation of quality, safety and efficacy in biomedical pharmaceuticals in the field of allergology. He ensured, for example, that the international regulations for allergens set by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Pharmacopoeia Commission were adapted to the standard of modern biomedical pharmaceuticals and decisively advanced the development of evidence-based allergen products through his efforts for the Therapy Allergen Regulation. In presenting the Charles Blackley Award for Promotion of the Allergy Specialty 2021, the EAACI thanks Vieths for his extraordinary efforts and outstanding work in the field of allergology as well as within the Academy.

"As a member of the Research and Outreach Committee, Stefan Vieths performs important functions at the EAACI. This award confirms his outstanding efforts and pays tribute to his tremendous work. We are delighted for him," says Professor Klaus Cichutek, President of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines.

Vieths set up the specialist "Development and Standardisation of Allergen Extracts" group at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut. From 2002 to 2017 he took over as head of the "Allergology" section, Europe’s only allergology department integrated into a drug regulatory authority.
